What Makes Muscles Grow?
In order for your muscles to grow bigger and stronger, a stimulus must be applied that sets the muscle-building process in motion.
What is that stimulus? Intensity of Effort!
As it applies to exercise, intensity is defined as the percentage of maximum momentary effort being exerted. And make no mistake, your workouts must be intense to build muscle. Nobody gets big and strong from lifting light weights or doing easy workouts.
So intense training has to come first; it is the stimulus, the thing that flips the switch and sets muscular change into motion.
But when you work out with maximum intensity, your workouts have to be brief. Why? Because intensity and duration are inversely proportional. If the intensity is very high, the duration, or length of your workout, must be low.
Picture yourself sprinting at top speed for a distance for 50 yards. Now imagine yourself running a distance of one mile. Can you run the mile at the same all-out pace you used in sprinting the 50 yards? No way! Since you drastically increased the duration of your run, the intensity had to decrease, whether you wanted it to or not. Just like no human being on earth can sprint all-out for a mile, no human being on earth can lift weights with maximum intensity for long periods of time.
And your body doesn't actually change during the workout; the workout merely stimulates the change. Then you need a recovery period to give your body time to produce those changes.
When you get done with a workout, you don't feel the same as you did before you started. You feel tired, maybe a little bit drained. Why? Because during the workout something was used up-the energy your body needed to complete the workout. In effect, by working out you have dug an energy hole.
The first thing that has to happen after a workout is that hole has to get filled in-you have to recover the energy that you used up. Once that energy has been replaced, then, and only then, can your body pile some extra muscle growth on top of where that hole used to be.
But if you workout again before that entire process is completed, you will short circuit the growth process, and ALL your training efforts will be wasted.
You must be careful to perform the precise amount of intense training required to stimulate muscle growth-no more, no less; then, get out of the gym for the precise amount of time required to allow that muscle growth to take place. Anything less is under-stimulating; anything more is over-training; and if you don't get it just right, you won't get bigger and stronger-period.
